1. Preface

1.1 Edition information

This edition applies to the Hercules S/370, ESA/390 and z/Architecture Emulator, Release 4.00.0 and to
all subsequent versions, releases and modifications until otherwise indicated in new editions. Make sure
you are using the correct edition for the level of software you are using.

1.2 What this book is about

This book is a guide for using and operating the Hercules Emulator and related additional products (both
required and optional). For guidance in installation or debugging Hercules or for a general overview,
additional manuals are available.

Please note that some information can be found in more than one manual. This redundancy is not inten-
ded to unnecessarily expand the manuals, rather to help find all necessary information in one place.

1.3 Who should read this book

This book is mainly intended for people who are responsible for operating the Hercules Emulator. It may
also be useful if you are responsible for installing the Hercules Emulator.

1.4 What you need to know to understand this book

To understand this book, you should be familiar using software under the Linux, Microsoft Windows or
Mac OS X operating systems. You should also have experience with Linux command shells or native
DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) and the Microsoft Windows command shell.

Last but not least you should be familiar with IBM mainframe environments (hardware and software) and
the underlying ideas and concepts as Hercules emulates IBM mainframe hardware.

1.5 How to use this book

This book is designed as a reference for all aspects the Hercules Emulator and related products. You can
go through the book chapter by chapter or you can use the book as a reference for all questions regar-
ding the operation of Hercules.
